COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences with a concentration in Occupational Therapy at University of New Haven is designed to prepare students for careers in healthcare and advanced graduate study in occupational therapy and related health professions. The program combines scientific knowledge, healthcare systems education, research skills, and practical clinical preparation to help students develop a strong interdisciplinary foundation for the modern healthcare workforce. Students complete a 40-credit University Core Curriculum that strengthens communication, mathematics, ethics, psychology, cultural awareness, nutrition, and healthcare understanding through courses such as English, statistics, bioethics, food and nutrition, and introduction to the U.S. healthcare system. Major coursework focuses on health professions, epidemiology, healthcare leadership, healthcare law and regulation, health economics and finance, cultural competence, and advanced research design and writing. Students also complete a capstone project and internship experience that provide valuable real-world exposure and professional development. The science component of the curriculum includes biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology or genetics, and physics, ensuring students gain a strong understanding of human structure, function, and health-related sciences. Communication and behavioral science courses such as health communication, multicultural psychology, health psychology, or medical sociology help students understand patient interaction, teamwork, and diverse healthcare environments. The Occupational Therapy concentration specifically prepares students for graduate-level occupational therapy programs through specialized courses including Introduction to Occupational Therapy, Child Development, Adolescent Development, and Abnormal Psychology. These courses help students understand human growth, mental health, developmental behavior, and therapeutic approaches relevant to occupational therapy practice. In addition to required coursework, students complete 24 credits of electives that allow flexibility to explore related healthcare interests or strengthen preparation for graduate school. Graduates are prepared for careers in healthcare organizations, rehabilitation centers, public health agencies, and clinical support roles, while also building a competitive academic foundation for occupational therapy and other advanced healthcare professions.
