COURSE CURRICULUM

The B.S. in Genetics and Biotechnology at University of New Haven provides an intensive STEM-focused curriculum that combines biology, chemistry, genetics, molecular science, biotechnology, and data analysis to prepare students for careers in modern biomedical and biotechnology industries. The program requires completion of 123 credits, including University Core Curriculum requirements, advanced laboratory science courses, and free electives. Students build strong foundations in molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, evolutionary biology, biotechnology, genomics, and bioinformatics. The curriculum also includes rigorous chemistry training through general chemistry, organic chemistry, instrumental analysis, and laboratory-based scientific experimentation. Mathematics and physics courses strengthen students’ quantitative and analytical abilities, while courses such as scientific evaluation and writing help develop professional communication and research skills. Advanced biotechnology-focused coursework includes molecular genetics/genomics, molecular biotechnology, and bioinformatics, giving students exposure to cutting-edge scientific technologies used in pharmaceutical development, biomedical research, genetic testing, genomics, and biotechnological innovation. Extensive laboratory experiences are integrated throughout the program, allowing students to gain practical skills in scientific techniques, experimental design, data interpretation, and molecular analysis. Students may further specialize through advanced electives such as nucleic acid biochemistry, molecular biology of proteins, or internships that provide real-world industry or research experience. The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for employment in biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical laboratories, healthcare industries, biomedical research institutions, and government or private research facilities. Graduates are also well prepared for advanced study in graduate or professional programs including genetics, biotechnology, molecular biology, medicine, pharmacy, biomedical sciences, and related healthcare fields. Because the program is STEM-designated, international students may also benefit from extended Optional Practical Training opportunities in the United States after graduation.
