COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Fire Science with a concentration in Fire Administration is designed to prepare students for leadership and management careers in municipal, industrial, and private fire service organizations. The program combines technical fire science education with administrative, legal, operational, and emergency management training to provide students with the knowledge and professional skills required for advancement within the fire service industry. Students complete a 40-credit University Core Curriculum that includes academic writing, communication, mathematics, chemistry, psychology, humanities, and additional Tier 2 coursework, along with a certified writing-intensive course that strengthens professional communication abilities. The major curriculum introduces students to essential fire science concepts through courses in fire science technology, fire chemistry and physics, fire investigation, fire prevention, fire protection hydraulics and water supply, hazardous materials chemistry, fire protection systems, fire and life safety codes, and building construction for fire protection. Advanced courses focus on special hazard control, fire protection law, and internship experiences that provide practical exposure to professional fire service environments. The Fire Administration concentration specifically emphasizes leadership, organizational management, and emergency operations within fire departments and public safety agencies. Students study emergency scene operations, occupational safety and health, hazard risk management, process and transportation hazards, municipal fire administration, personnel management, and emergency incident management. Additional coursework in fire prevention organization and management, advanced fire investigation with laboratory training, and applications of fire research further develops analytical and operational expertise. Public administration coursework helps students understand governance, organizational structures, and policy management relevant to emergency services and fire departments. The program also includes advisor-approved electives that allow students to tailor their education toward specialized career goals or professional interests. Overall, the degree prepares graduates to manage firefighting operations, lead emergency response teams, enforce fire safety regulations, investigate fire incidents, and oversee fire prevention programs while developing the leadership and administrative capabilities necessary for advancement into supervisory and executive roles within the fire service profession.
