COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science combines scientific study, practical training, and healthcare-focused education to prepare students for careers in fitness, wellness, rehabilitation, athletics, and related health professions. Students completing the program follow the School of Health Sciences core curriculum, which includes coursework in bioethics, the U.S. healthcare system, and food, nutrition, and culture, helping students develop ethical awareness, healthcare knowledge, and cultural competence for professional practice. The major curriculum provides a strong scientific foundation through courses in anatomy and physiology with laboratory components, chemistry, nutrition, physics, and health psychology, giving students a detailed understanding of human body systems, movement, health, and performance. Specialized exercise science courses introduce students to exercise physiology, kinesiology, strength and conditioning, injury prevention, wellness coaching, group exercise training, health behavior intervention, and fitness assessment techniques. Students also study the social and behavioral aspects of physical activity and sport, learning how exercise influences health, performance, and quality of life across different populations and environments. Practical application is emphasized through coursework in personal training, testing and assessment, and clinical exercise physiology, allowing students to gain hands-on experience with fitness evaluation, exercise prescription, and performance improvement strategies. The curriculum is designed to prepare students to work effectively with clients, athletes, patients, and healthcare professionals in fitness centers, sports organizations, rehabilitation facilities, wellness programs, and healthcare settings. A required internship provides structured real-world experience in a health-related or fitness environment, while the Exercise Science Capstone serves as a culminating experience where students integrate scientific knowledge, clinical understanding, and professional skills into an advanced project or applied learning experience. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in fitness and recreation, wellness coaching, strength and conditioning, rehabilitation support, sports performance, and health promotion, while also providing a strong academic foundation for graduate or professional study in exercise science, physical therapy, athletic training, occupational therapy, public health, or other allied health professions.
