COURSE CURRICULUM

The University Core Curriculum and Cybersecurity major requirements together create a structured STEM-focused academic program designed to build both broad foundational education and advanced technical expertise in computing and network security. Students must complete a minimum of 40 credits in the University Core Curriculum across multiple competency tiers, including essential general education courses in English composition (ENGL 1112 or ENGL 1113), communication (COMM 1130), mathematics (MATH 1115), and physics (PHYS 1150 or PHYS 1103), along with approved competency-based electives that strengthen critical thinking, analytical ability, and scientific literacy. Core Tier 2 introduces additional foundational coursework such as CSCI 1110 and economics (ECON 1133 or ECON 1134), along with further Tier 2 electives that broaden interdisciplinary understanding and problem-solving skills. The major curriculum begins with core computing and technical foundations including Introduction to Computing, Technical Writing in Computing, Discrete Mathematics, Digital Systems and Logic Design, Intermediate Programming in C and C++, Computer Security, Python scripting, Databases and SQL, Computer Organization and Architecture, Operating Systems, Networking Technologies, and Cyber Forensic Science. Students then progress into advanced topics such as Advanced Computer Networks, Network Defense, Cloud Computing, Ethical Hacking, and an internship or research experience that provides real-world exposure to cybersecurity environments. A two-part capstone sequence in network analysis, design, and implementation ensures hands-on professional-level application of knowledge. Students also choose a programming elective (such as Java Programming or Data Structures and Algorithms) and a network administration elective (Windows or Unix systems) to deepen technical specialization. The Network Security concentration further requires two advanced electives in areas such as cryptography, memory forensics, artificial intelligence, wireless computing, and advanced digital forensics, allowing students to focus on modern security challenges. Additional academic breadth is ensured through mathematics or laboratory science electives, including calculus, statistics, physics, chemistry, biology, or environmental science, which strengthen quantitative and scientific reasoning. The program also includes restricted electives and free electives for customization, along with a professional enrichment requirement. Overall, the curriculum integrates theory, applied technical skills, ethical responsibility, and professional development to prepare graduates for careers in cybersecurity, network defense, cloud security, ethical hacking, and related technology fields.
