COURSE CURRICULUM

The University Core Curriculum and Cybersecurity major requirements together form a structured program designed to build strong general education skills alongside advanced technical knowledge in computing and cybersecurity. Students must complete at least 40 credits of core curriculum across multiple competency tiers, including foundational courses in English composition, communication, mathematics, physics, and approved competency-based electives that develop critical thinking and interdisciplinary awareness. Core Tier 2 adds introductory computing, economics, and additional electives that strengthen analytical and problem-solving abilities. The major begins with essential computing and technical foundations such as introduction to computing, technical writing for computing, discrete mathematics, intermediate programming in C and C++, digital systems and logic design, computer security, Python scripting, databases and SQL, computer organization, operating systems, and networking technologies, all of which build a comprehensive understanding of computer systems. Advanced courses focus on cybersecurity specialization, including cyber forensic science, advanced computer networks, network defense, and practical experience through internships or research. Students complete a capstone sequence involving network analysis, design, and implementation projects that simulate real-world cybersecurity challenges. The program also allows customization through electives in programming, network administration (Windows or Unix systems), and upper-level cybersecurity courses at both 3000 and 4000 levels, enabling deeper specialization. Additional requirements in mathematics or laboratory sciences such as calculus, statistics, biology, chemistry, environmental science, or physics ensure scientific literacy and analytical strength. Students also complete restricted electives and free electives aligned with their academic and career goals, providing flexibility in shaping their expertise. Overall, the curriculum is designed to integrate theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional development to prepare students for careers in cybersecurity, network security, digital forensics, and related technology fields.
