COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice at the University of New Haven provides students with a thorough understanding of the criminal justice system and the study of crime, preparing them for professional careers in law enforcement, public service, and social service organizations, as well as for graduate study in related fields. The program is structured around core learning outcomes that emphasize the application of theory, methods, and empirical findings to issues involving policing, corrections, and the courts. Students are trained to analyze a substantial body of literature related to criminal justice institutions, strengthening their ability to evaluate policies, practices, and system effectiveness. A strong emphasis is also placed on communication, with students expected to integrate criminal justice concepts effectively in both oral and written forms, while developing the ability to evaluate ethical and moral issues within professional justice system settings. In addition to completing the University Core Curriculum and foundational criminal justice courses, students pursuing the Police Science concentration focus on the roles, responsibilities, and operational functions of law enforcement in maintaining law and order, protecting life and property, and supporting public safety services. The curriculum includes specialized coursework such as Principles of Criminal Investigation, Introduction to Policing, Criminal Justice Data Systems, Community Policing and Crime Reduction, and Crime Mapping and Analysis. Students also select advanced study in areas such as Police and Crime Control or Police in Society, which deepen their understanding of policing strategies, institutional behavior, and the relationship between law enforcement and communities. These courses emphasize both practical and analytical skills, including investigative techniques, data-driven policing, and crime analysis. Alongside the major requirements, students complete free electives that broaden their academic experience and support interdisciplinary learning. Overall, the program prepares graduates with strong analytical, ethical, research, and communication skills necessary for entry into law enforcement careers or continued academic study, while promoting evidence-based and community-oriented approaches to policing and public safety.
