COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Crime Data Analytics and Visualization at the University of New Haven is a STEM-informed program that integrates traditional criminal justice education with modern data analytics, statistical reasoning, and geographic information systems (GIS) to prepare students for careers in data-driven law enforcement, policy analysis, and public safety. The program provides a comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system, including policing, criminal law, court processes, corrections, and criminological theory, while also emphasizing the social, ethical, and procedural dimensions of justice. Students begin with foundational courses in criminal justice, criminal law, criminal procedure, criminology, scientific methods, quantitative applications, psychology, and race, class, and gender issues in the justice system, which collectively develop a strong conceptual and analytical base. Communication, writing, and professional development are also embedded throughout the curriculum to ensure students can effectively interpret and present complex justice-related information. The concentration in Crime Data Analytics and Visualization builds advanced technical skills through specialized coursework in criminal justice data systems, data visualization, crime mapping and analysis, and computational research and program evaluation. These courses train students to collect, manage, and analyze large datasets related to crime patterns, enabling them to identify trends, forecast potential risks, and support evidence-based decision-making in policing and criminal justice administration. GIS and visualization tools are used to translate raw data into meaningful spatial and statistical representations that can guide operational and strategic decisions.
