COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science is a STEM-designated and ABET-accredited program at the University of New Haven designed to prepare students for rapidly evolving careers in software development, systems engineering, cybersecurity, data science, and related computing fields. The curriculum is structured around a strong theoretical and practical foundation that combines mathematics, programming, computer systems, and software engineering with professional development and applied problem solving. Students begin with core coursework in programming fundamentals, discrete mathematics, technical writing, and introductory computing concepts while also completing essential university core requirements in communication, science, and quantitative reasoning. As they progress, they move into intermediate and advanced topics such as data structures and algorithms, object-oriented programming in Java, C and C++, databases and SQL, operating systems, computer organization, networking technologies, and computer security. The program emphasizes both hardware and software integration, ensuring students understand how systems interact at multiple levels, from digital logic design to high-level application development. In the upper years, students complete senior-level electives and specialized coursework in areas such as systems programming, programming languages, advanced C++, cybersecurity, and software architecture, alongside a required two-semester capstone project that simulates real-world industry development. Additional requirements include laboratory science, advanced mathematics electives, and restricted electives that allow students to tailor their studies toward areas like cybersecurity, game development, artificial intelligence, or software engineering. An internship or research experience is also integrated to provide professional exposure and practical application of skills. Throughout the program, students develop key outcomes such as analytical problem solving, effective communication, teamwork, ethical responsibility, and the ability to design and implement computing solutions for complex problems. Graduates are prepared for entry-level professional roles in technology industries or for advanced study, with strong adaptability to emerging tools, languages, and computing environments in a rapidly changing digital world.
