COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering is a STEM-designated, ABET-accredited program focused on the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure systems that support modern society. The curriculum prepares students to address critical societal challenges such as transportation congestion, environmental pollution, water resource management, structural safety, and sustainable urban development. It is structured over four years, beginning with a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering principles, and communication skills. In the freshman year, students complete courses in calculus I and II, physics with laboratory, introductory engineering, technical writing, computer-aided drafting, engineering analysis, and engineering geology, establishing the analytical and spatial reasoning skills needed for engineering practice. The sophomore year advances these foundations with calculus III, differential equations, statics, mechanics of materials, surveying and geomatics, civil engineering systems, and introductory chemistry with laboratories, while also introducing societal and entrepreneurial perspectives in engineering. The junior year focuses on core civil engineering disciplines including hydraulics, soil mechanics and laboratory, water resources engineering, structural analysis, transportation engineering, environmental engineering with laboratory, construction materials, and engineering economics or project management, along with internship opportunities that provide real-world experience. The senior year emphasizes advanced design and professional preparation through courses in foundation design, applied engineering statistics, ethical and professional practice, and a two-semester capstone design sequence where students integrate knowledge from across the curriculum to solve complex infrastructure problems. Students also complete technical electives in specialized areas such as highway engineering, water and wastewater systems, sustainable urban planning, steel design, construction management, hydrology, and infrastructure inspection, allowing customization of their expertise. Additional general education electives broaden cultural, historical, and creative perspectives. Throughout the program, students develop strong technical, computational, and design skills, along with teamwork, communication, and project management abilities. Emphasis is placed on sustainability, ethics, and professional responsibility. Graduates are prepared for careers in civil engineering practice across public and private sectors or for advanced graduate study in specialized civil engineering fields, contributing to the development of safe, efficient, and sustainable infrastructure systems.
