COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry is a STEM-designated program designed to provide a rigorous, ACS-aligned foundation in the core areas of analytical, organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, preparing students for careers in chemical industries, pharmaceuticals, environmental science, biotechnology, data-driven research, and advanced graduate study. The program consists of approximately 121–122 credits and integrates structured coursework across four years, combining classroom instruction, laboratory training, and research experience. In the freshman year, students establish foundational knowledge through general chemistry with laboratories, calculus I and II, academic writing, communication skills, introductory entrepreneurial concepts for scientists, and early exposure to liberal arts requirements, including electives in social or global perspectives. The sophomore year strengthens scientific and quantitative preparation through organic chemistry I and II with laboratories, quantitative and instrumental analysis, calculus III, physics I and II with laboratories, and an elective in mathematics or computer science, building essential analytical and problem-solving abilities. The junior year advances into core theoretical and experimental chemistry with physical chemistry I and II, synthetic methods, biochemistry with laboratory, and additional technical, advanced chemistry, and general education electives. This stage emphasizes integration of theory with laboratory practice, scientific reasoning, and data interpretation. The senior year focuses on specialization, research, and professional development through advanced chemistry coursework, chemical literature analysis, seminars, and a culminating thesis or honors research project, alongside additional technical and free electives. Students pursuing specialized tracks in computational and AI chemistry replace certain advanced electives with computational chemistry courses; pharmaceutical chemistry students take advanced biomedical and medicinal chemistry courses including pharmacology and protein biochemistry; and environmental chemistry students complete coursework in environmental science, environmental chemistry, and geoscience or pollution studies. Across all pathways, students develop strong laboratory competence, computational and analytical skills, and scientific communication abilities. The curriculum emphasizes independent research, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary problem-solving. Upon completion, graduates are prepared for scientific careers in industry, government, healthcare, environmental agencies, or for advanced graduate study in chemistry and related interdisciplinary fields, with the ability to adapt to rapidly evolving scientific and technological challenges.
