COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering is a STEM-designated, ABET-accredited program designed to prepare students for careers in chemical, biochemical, pharmaceutical, energy, environmental, and materials engineering, as well as for advanced graduate study. The curriculum is structured over four years and integrates strong foundations in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and engineering science with progressively advanced chemical engineering coursework and extensive laboratory and design experiences. In the first year, students complete foundational courses including general chemistry with laboratory, calculus I and II, physics preparation, academic writing, communication, and introductory engineering modules such as engineering analysis, technical reporting, and an introduction to chemical engineering technology, alongside a required C5T1 elective. The sophomore year builds scientific depth through organic chemistry, advanced chemistry or physical chemistry electives, differential equations, calculus III, and physics sequences, combined with core chemical engineering courses in process analysis, thermal-fluid systems, materials in engineering systems, and modeling of engineering systems. In the junior year, students enter core chemical engineering practice through thermodynamics, transport operations, reaction kinetics and reactor design, and laboratory work, while also studying sustainability, ethics, engineering economics, and professional issues, as well as engineering systems in analog devices. A biology elective introduces interdisciplinary biological foundations relevant to biomolecular engineering. The senior year focuses on advanced integration and application through mass transfer operations, process dynamics and control, chemical engineering laboratories, and a two-semester capstone design sequence where students solve complex, industry-style problems. Additional general education electives and engineering/science electives allow further specialization and breadth. Throughout the program, students develop strong quantitative, computational, and experimental skills, along with teamwork, communication, and project management abilities essential for professional engineering practice. The curriculum emphasizes safety, sustainability, ethics, and real-world application of engineering principles. Upon completion, graduates are prepared for careers in process engineering, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, energy systems, environmental engineering, and related industries, or for graduate study in chemical and biomolecular engineering and allied scientific fields requiring advanced problem-solving and technical expertise.
