COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering is a STEM-designated, ABET-accredited program designed to prepare students for careers in chemical, biochemical, pharmaceutical, energy, environmental, materials, and biomedical engineering, as well as for advanced graduate study. The curriculum is structured as a rigorous 131-credit, four-year sequence that builds a strong multidisciplinary foundation in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and engineering science before advancing into specialized chemical and biomolecular engineering topics and culminating in a comprehensive capstone design experience. In the freshman year, students complete foundational coursework in general chemistry with laboratory, calculus I and II, physics preparation, academic writing, communication, and introductory engineering subjects such as engineering analysis, technical reporting, and an introduction to chemical engineering technology, alongside a required C5T1 elective. The sophomore year deepens scientific and analytical preparation through organic chemistry, advanced chemistry or physical chemistry options, differential equations, calculus III, physics sequences, and core engineering courses in process analysis, thermal-fluid systems, materials in engineering systems, and modeling of engineering systems. The junior year focuses on core chemical engineering principles including thermodynamics, transport operations, reaction kinetics, reactor design, and laboratory experience, while also integrating sustainability, ethics, engineering economics, and professional engineering practice, along with a required biology course (BIOL 2253) to support biomolecular understanding. The senior year introduces biomedical engineering specialization through BIOM 3300 alongside advanced chemical engineering courses in mass transfer, process dynamics and control, laboratory work, and a two-semester capstone design sequence where students address complex, real-world engineering problems. Students also complete electives in engineering, science, and general education, with additional concentration options allowing deeper study in biomedical-related areas such as anatomy and physiology, microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, or approved biomolecular engineering topics. Throughout the program, students develop strong technical, computational, experimental, and design skills, along with communication, teamwork, and project management abilities. The curriculum emphasizes safety, sustainability, ethics, and interdisciplinary problem-solving. Upon completion, graduates are prepared for careers in chemical, biomedical, and related engineering fields or for advanced graduate study requiring strong quantitative and systems-thinking capabilities.
