COURSE CURRICULUM

The Human Resource Management (HRM) concentration within the Business Management B.S. program at the University of New Haven is structured to develop students into professionals capable of managing workforce systems, labor relations, and organizational development across a range of industries. The program begins with the 41-credit University Core Curriculum, which builds foundational competencies in quantitative literacy, critical thinking, communication, and economics through courses such as applied business math, business analytics, microeconomics, and macroeconomics. Students then complete the 30-credit Pompea College of Business core, which provides broad business training in accounting, finance, marketing, management, business law, organizational behavior, ethics, analytics, and a capstone experience designed to integrate knowledge across functional areas into strategic decision-making.The HRM major requirements (30 credits) provide advanced specialization in managing human capital within organizations. Students begin with core HR foundations such as Management of Human Resources, Employment Law and Labor Relations, and Workforce Diversity, which establish an understanding of workplace systems, legal frameworks, and diversity management. They then progress into applied and strategic HR topics including Talent Management, Human Resource Development, Compensation, Multinational Management, Contemporary Business Issues, and Current Issues in Human Resource Management, all of which focus on how organizations recruit, develop, reward, and retain employees while responding to global and ethical challenges. A key applied component of the concentration requires students to complete an Internship, Practicum, or Independent Study, providing hands-on professional experience in real organizational settings. The program is completed with 20 credits of free electives, allowing students to broaden their academic preparation or pursue complementary areas such as psychology, entrepreneurship, or marketing. Overall, this concentration integrates business fundamentals with specialized HR expertise to prepare graduates for roles in workforce planning, employee relations, training and development, compensation management, and broader organizational leadership within both domestic and international contexts.
