COURSE CURRICULUM

The Pre-medical Science concentration within the Bachelor of Science in Biology program at University of New Haven provides students with rigorous scientific and healthcare-focused preparation for medical school and other health-related professional programs. The curriculum is carefully structured to align with pre-medical studies requirements and includes extensive coursework in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, psychology, ethics, and healthcare sciences to ensure students meet common medical school prerequisites. Students complete University Core Curriculum requirements that strengthen communication, analytical reasoning, scientific literacy, psychology, biochemistry, statistics, and calculus foundations. The concentration emphasizes comprehensive understanding of human biology and health through courses such as Biology I and II, Anatomy and Physiology I and II with laboratories, Microbiology, Genetics, Cell Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Scientific Evaluation and Writing, and Senior Seminar. Laboratory training is integrated throughout the curriculum, helping students develop practical scientific skills, data analysis abilities, and proficiency with laboratory instrumentation used in biological and medical sciences. Students also complete a strong chemistry sequence including General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, and associated laboratory coursework, along with two semesters of physics with laboratory training. Additional courses such as Foundations of Medical Terminology, Sociology or Cultural Anthropology, and Ethics or Bioethics help students understand healthcare systems, patient diversity, social factors affecting health, and ethical decision-making in medicine. The curriculum further allows students to specialize through restricted electives in advanced areas including Immunology, Molecular Biology, Neurobiology, Histology, Pathology, Evolutionary Medicine, Environmental Health, Viruses and Disease, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology, Healthcare Systems, Cultural Competence in Healthcare, and Social Determinants of Health. These electives provide deeper insight into biomedical sciences and healthcare-related issues while supporting preparation for medical and professional school admission exams and future clinical practice. Students also complete 12 credits of free electives that provide flexibility for additional academic interests or complementary studies. Overall, the program combines advanced scientific education, laboratory experience, healthcare knowledge, ethical understanding, and research literacy to prepare graduates for successful admission into medical, osteopathic, dental, pharmacy, physician assistant, public health, and other professional healthcare programs while building a strong foundation for careers in biomedical and health sciences.
