COURSE CURRICULUM

The Cellular and Molecular Biology concentration within the Bachelor of Science in Biology program at University of New Haven provides students with specialized education focused on cellular processes, molecular systems, genetics, biotechnology, and biomedical sciences. This STEM-designated concentration is designed for students interested in careers or advanced study in biomedical research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, molecular diagnostics, and related life science fields. The program combines rigorous coursework in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics with extensive laboratory training to prepare students for both graduate study and professional scientific careers. Students gain foundational knowledge through courses such as Biology I and II, Genetics, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Organic Chemistry, and General Chemistry, while also developing quantitative skills through Calculus and Statistics. Laboratory experience is a central component of the curriculum, allowing students to safely perform experimental procedures, analyze scientific data, use advanced laboratory instrumentation, and develop technical proficiency in cellular and molecular biology techniques. The program also includes scientific evaluation and writing coursework that strengthens students’ research literacy, critical thinking, and scientific communication skills. Students complete two semesters of college physics with laboratory work, providing additional interdisciplinary scientific preparation important for biomedical and technological applications. The concentration further allows students to specialize through advanced restricted electives in areas such as Molecular Biotechnology, Protein Biochemistry and Enzymology, Nucleic Acid Biochemistry, Molecular Genetics and Genomics, and Molecular Biology of Nucleic Acids with Laboratory. These advanced courses help students explore modern developments in genetics, molecular research, and biotechnology while strengthening laboratory and analytical expertise. In addition to the required scientific coursework, students complete 30 credits of free electives, providing flexibility to pursue additional academic interests or specialized study areas. The curriculum is designed to equip students with both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills needed for entry-level positions in biomedical and pharmaceutical laboratories as well as companies utilizing cellular and molecular biology technologies. Graduates are also well prepared for advanced education in biology, biomedical sciences, medicine, pharmacy, biotechnology, genetics, and related scientific disciplines.
