COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry at University of New Haven provides students with a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum that combines biology, chemistry, mathematics, and laboratory science to prepare for careers and advanced study in biochemistry, biotechnology, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and scientific research. Students complete a 41-credit University Core Curriculum with specialized scientific requirements including calculus, advanced mathematics, physics, and senior-level biology seminar courses that strengthen analytical, quantitative, and scientific reasoning skills. The major curriculum consists of 55 to 58 credits focused on foundational and advanced concepts in biology and chemistry. Students begin with core science courses such as Biology I and II, Genetics, Scientific Evaluation and Writing, General Chemistry I and II with laboratories, and Organic Chemistry I and II with laboratory training. The curriculum then advances into specialized scientific study through courses such as Physical Chemistry for the Life Sciences and Structure and Mechanism in Biological Chemistry, helping students understand molecular interactions and biochemical processes in living systems. Laboratory experience is strongly emphasized throughout the program, allowing students to develop technical proficiency, experimental analysis skills, and experience using scientific instrumentation safely and effectively. Students further customize their education through restricted elective groups that include advanced laboratory and lecture courses such as Microbiology, Cell Biology, Quantitative Analysis, Instrumental Methods, Molecular Biology, Protein Biochemistry and Enzymology, Nucleic Acid Biochemistry, Advanced Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, and Pharmacology. These electives allow students to explore specialized interests and career goals while strengthening expertise in modern biological and chemical sciences. Students also complete a senior seminar course that encourages scientific discussion, research presentation, and professional communication development. In addition to the major coursework, students complete 12 credits of technical electives and four free electives, providing opportunities for broader scientific exploration or interdisciplinary study. The curriculum emphasizes scientific theory, research literacy, data analysis, laboratory proficiency, and communication skills necessary for professional scientific practice.
