COURSE CURRICULUM

The Accounting major within the Pompea College of Business curriculum is designed to provide students with a strong academic foundation in accounting principles, business operations, analytics, finance, and professional development while preparing them for careers in accounting, auditing, taxation, and financial management. Students complete the 41-credit University Core Curriculum with specialized business-focused courses that fulfill key competency requirements. These include Applied Business Math and Introduction to Business Analytics for mathematical and quantitative literacy, Introduction to Business and Entrepreneurship and Introduction to Microeconomics for critical thinking and problem-solving, and Introduction to Macroeconomics for understanding economic systems and society. Students also benefit from flexibility in satisfying the Writing Across the Curriculum requirement. The business core curriculum develops broad business knowledge through courses such as Introduction to Financial Accounting, Introduction to Managerial Accounting, Accounting Information Systems, Professional Business Foundations, Information and Analytics in the Value Chain, Business Law, Business Finance, Principles of Marketing, Management and Organization, Ethics and Diversity, and a Business Capstone course that integrates learning across business disciplines. Students are also required to complete a professional enrichment experience designed to strengthen career readiness and leadership development. The Accounting major itself consists of 25 credits focused on advanced accounting knowledge and professional practice. Courses include Intermediate Financial Accounting I, II, and III, Cost Accounting, Advanced Financial Accounting, Auditing and Assurance Services, and Federal Income Taxation I and II. Students also take Introduction to the Accounting Profession during the freshman year to gain early exposure to accounting careers and professional expectations. The curriculum emphasizes financial reporting, auditing procedures, taxation, managerial accounting, information systems, ethical decision-making, and analytical problem-solving skills necessary for the accounting profession. Additionally, students complete 22 credits of free electives selected in consultation with an academic advisor. These electives allow students to pursue advanced coursework, explore emerging topics of professional importance, or strengthen expertise in specialized business areas. Overall, the program combines technical accounting education, business leadership preparation, analytical training, and professional development to prepare graduates for successful careers in public accounting, corporate finance, taxation, consulting, and related business fields.
