COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a concentration in General Psychology provides students with a broad and scientifically grounded understanding of human behavior, mental processes, personality, development, and psychological research. The program combines foundational psychology coursework, interdisciplinary study, and specialized elective options to prepare students for careers in mental health services, education, research, human resources, social services, healthcare, and graduate study in psychology or related fields. Students complete 25 credits of required psychology courses that establish a strong core in psychological theory, scientific inquiry, and applied practice. These courses include introductory psychology, abnormal psychology, physiological psychology, personality theory, research methods, statistics for behavioral sciences, history and systems of psychology, and a capstone experience in applied experimental psychology. Together, these subjects help students understand psychological disorders, biological influences on behavior, scientific research techniques, personality development, and the evolution of psychological thought. Students also complete required non-psychology courses in biology and sociology to strengthen their understanding of human behavior from biological and social perspectives. The General Psychology concentration allows students to customize their studies through breadth areas covering clinical psychology, cognitive and experimental psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, and fieldwork experiences. In the clinical psychology area, students may study community psychology, behavioral therapies, case management, assessment techniques, or counseling psychology. Cognitive and experimental options explore learning, perception, language, cognition, and legal psychology, while developmental psychology focuses on child and adolescent growth. Social psychology courses examine multicultural perspectives, organizational behavior, human sexuality, and social interactions. The fieldwork component gives students valuable hands-on experience through undergraduate research, internships, senior research projects, or honors thesis work, allowing them to apply classroom knowledge in professional or academic settings. Through this combination of scientific training, research experience, and specialized elective study, students develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, communication, and research skills essential for understanding complex psychological issues.
