COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a concentration in Community and Society combines psychological science with sociological perspectives to help students understand how social structures, cultural influences, communities, and inequalities shape human behavior and mental processes. The program provides a strong academic foundation through 25 credits of required psychology core courses that include introductory psychology, abnormal psychology, physiological psychology, research methods, behavioral statistics, personality theories, history and systems of psychology, and a capstone experience in applied experimental psychology. These courses help students develop knowledge of psychological theories, scientific research methods, ethical principles, and human behavior while strengthening analytical, communication, and critical thinking skills. Students also complete required non-psychology coursework in biology with laboratory experience and sociology to better understand the biological and social dimensions of behavior. The Community and Society concentration focuses on the relationship between individuals and society and prepares students for careers and graduate study related to social services, nonprofit organizations, advocacy, public policy, community development, counseling support, and research. Students complete breadth area courses in community psychology, cognitive and experimental psychology, developmental psychology, multicultural psychology, and fieldwork experiences. Elective options allow students to explore topics such as cognitive psychology, sensation and perception, human learning, legal psychology, child or adolescent development, and social behavior across diverse communities. The concentration also includes specialized sociology courses in social inequality, social psychology, social thought, and topics related to race, ethnicity, gender, or masculinity studies, helping students examine the impact of social systems and inequalities on individuals and communities. Practical learning opportunities are provided through undergraduate research, internships, senior research projects, or honors thesis experiences, allowing students to apply academic knowledge in professional and research settings. In addition, students complete 33 credits of free electives, offering flexibility to pursue complementary interests and career goals. Overall, the program prepares graduates with strong interdisciplinary knowledge, research abilities, and communication skills needed for careers in community organizations, human services, social advocacy, education, public health, research, and social science professions while also providing excellent preparation for graduate studies in psychology, sociology, counseling, social work, and related fields.
