COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Arts in History at University of New Haven provides students with a comprehensive study of global historical developments, political systems, cultural change, and international relations while strengthening critical thinking, research, analytical, and communication skills. Students complete a 40-credit University Core Curriculum that includes mathematics, global studies, historical perspectives, and interdisciplinary liberal arts education. History majors are encouraged to broaden their academic experience by taking courses outside the history discipline, and they are also encouraged to use free electives to study a foreign language to develop global and intercultural competence. The major curriculum requires students to study multiple historical regions and time periods, ensuring broad knowledge of world history. Students complete coursework in European, Latin American, and United States history, choosing courses focused on both pre-modern and modern societies and civilizations. Required classes such as HIST 2200 Facts and Falsehoods: Methods of Historical Investigation train students in historical research methods, source analysis, and evidence-based interpretation, while HIST 2260 East Asia and Great Power Competitions explores international political dynamics and global power relationships across history and the modern era. Students also complete PSCI 2241 International Relations, linking historical analysis with contemporary global affairs. The program includes a Senior Seminar that serves as a capstone experience, allowing students to conduct advanced historical research and develop substantial analytical writing projects. Students select an Area Studies concentration consisting of 9 upper-level history credits focused on Asia, Europe, Latin America, or the United States, along with additional upper-division history electives that allow deeper specialization in areas of personal interest. The degree also includes 45 credits of free electives, providing flexibility for internships, foreign language study, interdisciplinary exploration, or preparation for graduate school. Graduates develop strong research, writing, communication, and analytical skills that prepare them for careers in education, law, government, diplomacy, public service, journalism, business, international affairs, museums, archives, and graduate study in history or related fields.
