COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a concentration in Sports Media and Production is designed to prepare students for careers in sports broadcasting, journalism, digital storytelling, live event production, public relations, and multimedia communication. The curriculum combines communication theory, media production, journalism practices, and sports-focused coursework to provide students with both technical expertise and industry knowledge. Students complete 40 credits of University Core Curriculum with specialized requirements in group communication, social issues in sport, and the globalization of sport, helping them understand the social, cultural, and global dimensions of sports communication. The required major courses build foundational competencies in media and technology, writing for media platforms, television and digital production, digital media editing, media ethics, communication law, and the study of race, gender, and class in media. Students gain practical experience through production-based learning and professional opportunities such as practicums, internships, independent studies, or honors thesis projects, allowing them to apply classroom knowledge in real-world media settings while building professional portfolios and industry connections. The concentration courses specifically focus on sports media and journalism through subjects such as Introduction to Sports Media, News Writing and Reporting, and a senior capstone course in Sports Media and Production where students complete advanced projects under faculty or professional mentorship. Students also complete 18 credits of restricted electives that allow them to specialize in areas such as sports production, sports journalism, digital storytelling, television broadcasting, public relations, live event production, or esports management. Elective courses include advanced television production, convergent journalism, public relations writing, digital event production, social impact of media, electronic news gathering, multi-platform journalism practicum, sport marketing, and digital communication in sport. Through these experiences, students learn to use industry-standard software, production equipment, and multimedia tools while developing communication, leadership, collaboration, and creative problem-solving skills. The program emphasizes storytelling across multiple media platforms and prepares students to create complex real-world media projects in sports and news environments. Overall, the curriculum equips graduates with the technical abilities, communication expertise, journalistic skills, and production experience needed to succeed as sports broadcasters, media producers, digital content creators, sports journalists, public relations specialists, multimedia storytellers, or on-air personalities in the fast-evolving sports media industry.
