COURSE CURRICULUM

The Art and Creative Technology curriculum at University of New Haven combines studio art, digital technology, art history, design, and professional development to prepare students for careers in the contemporary creative industries. Students complete a 40-credit University Core Curriculum with specialized courses that integrate scientific understanding, communication, visual culture, and artistic analysis. These include Physics of Color and Light with Laboratory, Modern Art and Modernism, History of Art I, Art Theory and Criticism, Multimedia Communication, Applications of Graphic Design Production, and Contemporary Art. These courses help students develop analytical thinking, communication abilities, historical awareness, and an understanding of modern visual culture and design practices. The major itself consists of 63 credits focused on artistic practice, digital media, design technology, entrepreneurship, and professional preparation. Students build foundational artistic skills through courses such as Visual Thinking, 3D Design, Drawing I and II, Figure Drawing, Sculpture I, Painting I and II, and Digital Photography. The curriculum also introduces students to museum studies, helping them understand the cultural, historical, and professional aspects of art presentation and preservation. In addition to traditional art training, students gain experience in advanced creative technologies through courses in 3D Modeling and Animation, Digital Fabrication, Digital Imaging, Digital Illustration, and Community Design. These courses allow students to combine artistic creativity with emerging digital tools and innovative production techniques. The program further emphasizes professional development through Creative Entrepreneurship, Studio Seminar courses, internships, and independent study opportunities that help students develop career readiness, portfolio-building skills, and practical industry experience. Students may also select an additional studio art elective from areas such as studio art, digital art and design, graphic design, or illustration to further personalize their education. The curriculum culminates in advanced seminars, internships, or independent study experiences that encourage students to refine their creative voice and professional direction. Additionally, students complete 18 credits of electives that provide flexibility to explore other academic interests or strengthen expertise in specialized creative fields. Overall, the program combines artistic training, critical thinking, technological innovation, and professional preparation to help students become versatile and competitive creative professionals.
