COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science for Teachers (M.S.T.) in English requires the completion of at least 32 graduate credit hours at the 800 or 900 level, with a minimum of 24 credits completed within the Department of English. Any courses taken outside the department must be approved in advance by the student’s academic adviser to ensure they align with the student’s academic and professional goals. The program is designed to strengthen practicing teachers’ expertise in literature, writing, and composition while supporting their development as reflective and skilled educators in English language arts.A key component of the degree is the capstone experience, which allows students to synthesize their learning through one of several structured pathways. Students may choose a creative writing option, a teacher inquiry option, or a curricular option, depending on their interests and professional focus. Each option is intended to connect advanced study in literature and writing with classroom practice, enabling teachers to apply theoretical knowledge directly to instructional settings.The program also provides flexible summer study opportunities that can be used to meet some or all degree requirements. In particular, the New Hampshire Literacy Institutes offer intensive summer courses centered on the teaching of reading and writing in K–12 education. These institutes emphasize workshop-based learning in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, along with coursework in literature, composition theory, and research in literacy education. This structure allows educators to continue their graduate studies in a focused, immersive environment while remaining engaged in their teaching careers during the academic year.
