COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Science in Statistics at the University of New Hampshire requires the completion of 30 graduate credit hours, equivalent to at least ten semester courses approved by the department, and is designed to provide advanced training in statistical theory, methodology, and real-world data analysis. Most coursework is selected from advanced statistics courses offered between MATH 836 and MATH 979, ensuring students develop both strong theoretical foundations and applied analytical skills. The program includes several core requirements unless equivalent courses were completed prior to enrollment. These include MATH 839 Applied Regression Analysis, which focuses on modeling relationships within data and interpreting statistical outcomes; MATH 840 Design of Experiments I, which teaches students how to design effective experiments and analyze experimental data; MATH 855 Probability with Applications, which provides the mathematical basis for probability theory and its practical applications; and MATH 856 Principles of Statistical Inference, which develops understanding of estimation, hypothesis testing, and inferential reasoning. Students are also allowed flexibility in their studies, as up to three of the ten required courses may be selected from approved non-statistics mathematics courses or related courses offered in other departments, supporting interdisciplinary interests and career goals. A major feature of the program is the Master’s Project (MATH 898), which requires students to apply statistical methodology to a substantial real-world problem through supervised research and analysis. Before enrolling in MATH 898, students are expected to identify a faculty adviser whose research interests align with the proposed project area. The project involves significant application of statistical methods, research design, and data interpretation, culminating in both a formal written report and a public oral presentation. Student progress is guided and evaluated by a master’s committee consisting of at least two statistics faculty members. Depending on the complexity and scope of the research, MATH 898 may be taken for 3 to 6 credits, with the exact number determined by the faculty. Overall, the program combines rigorous coursework, interdisciplinary flexibility, and hands-on research experience to prepare graduates for careers in data analysis, industry, research, government, technology, and advanced doctoral study in statistics and related quantitative fields.
