COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Science in Physics at University of New Hampshire requires students to complete a minimum of 30 graduate credits focused on advanced theoretical physics, experimental training, and independent research or project work. The curriculum is designed to build a strong foundation in the core principles of modern physics while preparing students for careers in scientific research, technology, industry, education, or doctoral study. Required coursework includes PHYS 805 Experimental Physics, which develops laboratory and experimental proficiency, and PHYS 806 Introduction to Physics Research and Teaching, completed over two semesters to introduce students to professional research methods, scientific communication, and teaching practices. Students also complete advanced theory courses including PHYS 939 Classical Mechanics, PHYS 941 Electromagnetic Theory I, PHYS 942 Electromagnetic Theory II, and PHYS 943 Quantum Mechanics I, with the option to substitute PHYS 944 Quantum Mechanics II for PHYS 942 in some study plans. These courses provide rigorous preparation in analytical methods, mathematical physics, electromagnetism, quantum theory, and advanced mechanics that form the foundation of graduate-level physics research. After completing the core curriculum, students choose one of three capstone pathways. Option A is the thesis track, which includes at least 12 additional credits and a 6-credit PHYS 899 Master’s Thesis requiring original research and an oral defense before a faculty committee. Option B is the project track, which includes 12 additional credits and a PHYS 895 Master’s Project of up to 4 credits along with a seminar presentation demonstrating applied research or advanced technical work. Option C, available only to students in the Ph.D. pathway, requires 12 additional coursework credits plus successful completion of written comprehensive and oral qualifying examinations instead of a thesis or project. The program combines advanced coursework with research opportunities in fields such as applied optics, condensed matter physics, nuclear and particle physics, cosmology, high-energy theory, and space science. Through faculty mentorship, laboratory experience, and rigorous scientific training, the UNH Physics M.S. program prepares graduates for research-intensive careers and advanced doctoral programs in physics and related scientific disciplines.
