COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Science in Engineering Physics at University of New Hampshire is a 30-credit interdisciplinary graduate program designed to combine advanced physics training with engineering, mathematics, and computational methods to prepare students for careers in high-technology industries, research laboratories, and doctoral study. The program is structured to give students both a strong theoretical foundation in physics and the flexibility to specialize in applied engineering fields through graduate coursework and research. Required core courses include PHYS 805 Experimental Physics, which develops advanced laboratory and instrumentation skills, and PHYS 806 Introduction to Physics Research and Teaching, which introduces students to professional research practices and scientific communication over two semesters. Students then complete four additional 900-level courses totaling 12 credits, selected from a wide range of physics and engineering-related topics. These may include advanced physics subjects such as statistical physics, classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, plasma physics, solid-state physics, magnetohydrodynamics, astrophysics, and heliospheric physics, as well as interdisciplinary engineering and computational courses such as machine learning (CS 950), signal processing (ECE 941), control systems, computer architecture, partial differential equations (IAM 932), numerical analysis, continuum mechanics (ME 922), turbulence, and finite element analysis. Students are required to take at least one course within the physics department and at least one course outside it, ensuring both depth and interdisciplinary breadth. The program culminates in a capstone experience of 12 credits, which can be completed as either a thesis (PHYS 899) involving original research and an oral defense or a project (PHYS 895) focused on applied technical work with a seminar presentation. Through this structure, students develop strong analytical, computational, and experimental skills and gain experience working at the intersection of physics and engineering. Graduates are well prepared for roles in aerospace, defense, energy, quantum technologies, data science, materials research, and advanced scientific or engineering Ph.D. programs, supported by UNH’s R1 research environment and access to interdisciplinary faculty expertise and modern laboratory facilities.
