COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Ocean Engineering with an option in Ocean Mapping at University of New Hampshire requires completion of 37–38 graduate credits focused on advanced hydrographic surveying, seabed mapping technologies, marine geospatial science, and ocean engineering research. The curriculum combines rigorous technical coursework, field-based learning, laboratory experience, and independent thesis research to prepare students for professional and research careers in ocean mapping and hydrography. Students begin with OE 990 and OE 991 Ocean Seminars I and II, which introduce current developments in ocean science, engineering research, and professional communication. Core technical training includes ESCI 820 Ocean Measurements Lab, which develops practical experience with marine instrumentation and ocean data collection methods, and OE 865 Underwater Acoustics, focusing on acoustic principles used in sonar and seabed mapping systems. Students also complete OE 870 Geodesy for Ocean Mapping and OE 871 Positioning for Ocean Mapping, which provide expertise in spatial reference systems, satellite navigation, positioning technologies, and geospatial accuracy essential for hydrographic surveying. Specialized mapping instruction continues through OE 874 Integrated Seabed Mapping Systems and OE 875 Advanced Topics in Ocean Mapping, where students study sonar systems, bathymetric data processing, marine geophysics, and advanced ocean mapping technologies. The curriculum also includes OE 972 Hydrographic Field Course, an intensive hands-on field experience where students apply surveying and mapping techniques in real marine environments using professional-grade equipment and research vessels. Students complete additional electives chosen from areas such as ocean waves and tides, coastal engineering, digital signal processing, physical oceanography, spectral data analysis, hydrographic surveying applications, marine geology, and special topics courses that support individual research interests. The degree concludes with OE 899 Master’s Thesis, requiring original independent research that contributes to ocean mapping, hydrography, or marine geospatial science. Through advanced technical instruction, field operations, laboratory experiences, and thesis-based research, the UNH Ocean Mapping master’s program prepares graduates for careers in hydrographic surveying, marine technology, ocean exploration, offshore industries, environmental monitoring, and scientific research at national and international levels.
