COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology (MCBT) requires the completion of at least 30 graduate credits through a combination of core curriculum courses, electives, and a customized capstone experience designed to prepare students for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and related bioscience industries. The program begins with MCBS 801 Introduction to Careers in Biotechnology, which introduces students to professional pathways and industry expectations. Students then complete four core courses selected from two major scientific areas: biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology. At least two of these core courses must include laboratory components, ensuring strong practical and technical training. Recommended laboratory courses include subjects such as protein biochemistry, cell culture, tissue engineering, immunology laboratory methods, microbial genetics, molecular microbiology, and virology laboratory techniques. In consultation with a faculty adviser, students also develop a personalized curriculum plan that includes elective courses aligned with their career interests and specialization goals. Electives cover advanced topics such as pharmacology, genomics and bioinformatics, molecular genetics, cancer biochemistry, parasitology, data science for life sciences, applied bioinformatics, scientific communication, biotechnology regulation, ethics in research, and innovation law. The curriculum is intentionally flexible, allowing students to build expertise in areas such as protein biochemistry, genetic engineering, cell imaging, bioengineering, biomanufacturing, entrepreneurship, and regulatory science. Beyond formal coursework, students are encouraged to attend non-credit workshops, seminars, and specialized training sessions provided by research centers, university facilities, and biotechnology industry experts to strengthen practical knowledge and professional development. A major component of the program is the capstone experience, which is designed in collaboration with the faculty adviser and tailored to the student’s career goals. The capstone may involve a research project in a UNH laboratory or an internship or cooperative experience within a biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry setting. Students enroll in MCBS 895 Special Topics (MCBT Capstone) to receive academic credit for this experiential learning component, which may combine both workplace and university-based activities. Overall, the program emphasizes applied scientific training, industry readiness, technical expertise, and professional experience.
