COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in pure mathematics requires a total of 30 credit hours, which are completed through at least 10 approved graduate-level courses selected from specific mathematics and interdisciplinary mathematics-related offerings. These courses must be chosen from MATH 801–MATH 898, MATH 931–MATH 978, and IAM 830–IAM 962, ensuring that students engage with advanced and specialized mathematical topics. The program is structured to maintain a strong emphasis on higher-level theoretical mathematics, and therefore at least five of the ten required courses must be selected from either MATH 931–MATH 978 or from 900-level IAM courses, which represent more advanced graduate study. In addition, at least three courses must come specifically from MATH 931–MATH 955, reinforcing depth in foundational areas of pure mathematics. Certain intermediate courses, specifically MATH 905 through MATH 929, are excluded from meeting degree requirements, ensuring that students focus on more advanced content. However, with approval from the graduate committee, students may include up to two non-MATH graduate-level courses from the University of New Hampshire if they contribute meaningfully to their academic plan. This allows some flexibility for interdisciplinary enrichment while maintaining the program’s mathematical rigor. The degree culminates in a comprehensive two-hour oral examination, which serves as the final academic assessment. This exam covers three core areas of mathematics: analysis, algebra, and topology, reflecting the central pillars of pure mathematical study. Students are responsible for proposing an examining committee, which must then be approved by the Graduate Program Committee. This structure ensures both academic depth and personalized evaluation, allowing students to demonstrate mastery of advanced mathematical concepts, reasoning ability, and clear communication of complex ideas. The program is designed to prepare graduates for doctoral study, research careers, or advanced professional roles requiring strong mathematical expertise.
