COURSE CURRICULUM

The Hydrology M.S. program at University of New Hampshire is designed to provide advanced training in water science through a combination of core coursework, research, and either a thesis or directed research option. Students must complete a minimum of 30 graduate credits for the thesis option or 34 credits for the non-thesis option, with both pathways requiring completion of core hydrology training, electives, and a final research-based experience. The core curriculum establishes a strong foundation in Earth system water processes through courses such as Principles of Hydrology and Groundwater Hydrology, alongside essential professional development components including Seminar in Earth Sciences and Proposal Development, both typically taken in the first year. These courses ensure that students develop a solid understanding of hydrologic processes, from surface water systems to subsurface groundwater dynamics, while also gaining experience in scientific communication and research planning. Students then advance into either a Master’s Thesis (6 credits) or a Directed Research project (2 credits), both of which involve independent investigation, data analysis, and formal presentation of results, demonstrating mastery of hydrologic concepts and research methods. In addition to core requirements, students select elective courses from Earth sciences and related disciplines such as civil and environmental engineering, chemistry, mathematics, statistics, computer science, and natural resources, allowing them to tailor their degree toward specific interests like water resource management, climate impacts, or environmental modeling. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary learning and encourages integration of fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and quantitative methods.
