COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (M.S.) in Earth Sciences at UNH is designed to provide advanced training in understanding Earth systems through both scientific research and applied analytical methods, with two flexible pathways: thesis and non-thesis options. Both options require completion of a strong graduate curriculum that includes at least 30 credits for the thesis track and 34 credits for the non-thesis track, along with core coursework, seminars, and research components. A central feature of the program is the core curriculum, which requires students to select three graduate-level Earth Sciences courses from two major areas—methods and disciplinary studies—ensuring a balanced foundation in both technical skills and Earth system knowledge. Students must also complete ESCI 997 (Seminar in Earth Sciences) and ESCI 998 (Proposal Development), typically within the first year, to develop research communication skills and define their academic direction. In the thesis option, students complete a six-credit Master’s Thesis (ESCI 899), which involves original research, data analysis, and an oral defense of results before a faculty committee. This pathway is research-intensive and prepares students for careers in scientific research, Ph.D. programs, and specialized technical fields. In the non-thesis option, students complete a two-credit Directed Research project (ESCI 898) along with a written report and oral presentation, offering a more applied and flexible approach for those pursuing professional careers rather than research careers. Elective coursework allows further specialization and can be selected from Earth Sciences or related disciplines such as civil and environmental engineering, natural resources, chemistry, mathematics and statistics, and computer science, enabling interdisciplinary study. Students must also complete a Coursework Approval Form within their first year to ensure a structured academic plan. Overall, the program integrates classroom learning, research development, and interdisciplinary electives to prepare graduates for careers in environmental consulting, geoscience, climate science, resource management, and applied Earth system analysis.
