COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Science (M.S.) in Communication Sciences and Disorders at UNH is a professionally accredited graduate program designed to prepare students for advanced clinical practice as speech-language pathologists. The curriculum provides comprehensive training in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders across the lifespan, including speech sound disorders, language disorders, fluency disorders, voice disorders, motor speech disorders, cognitive-communication impairments, and dysphagia. Students also gain expertise in early childhood language development, school-age and adolescent communication needs, adult neurogenic disorders such as aphasia, and augmentative and alternative communication systems used to support individuals with severe communication challenges. The program requires completion of a structured set of core courses in assessment, intervention, counseling, ethical practice, and evidence-based clinical decision-making, ensuring that students develop both theoretical knowledge and applied clinical skills grounded in scientific research. Extensive clinical education is a defining feature of the program, with students completing multiple practicum experiences at the UNH Speech-Language-Hearing Center and the Clinic for Neurogenic Communication Disorders, followed by two externships in approved professional settings such as schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, early intervention programs, and private practices. These experiences provide supervised, hands-on training with diverse client populations and real-world clinical responsibilities. Students must also complete at least 15 observation hours before beginning clinical work and meet all professional, health, and background clearance requirements for external placements. The program culminates in a capstone experience, which may be either a comprehensive oral examination based on case analysis or a research-based Master’s Thesis involving original investigation and oral defense. Students selecting the thesis option register for dedicated thesis credits and work closely with faculty advisors. Throughout the program, students are expected to demonstrate essential professional competencies, including communication, cognitive, motor, sensory, and behavioral skills required for safe and effective clinical practice. Overall, the degree prepares graduates for certification and licensure as speech-language pathologists and careers in healthcare, education, rehabilitation, and research settings focused on improving communication and swallowing outcomes for individuals with disorders.
