COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (M.S.) in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNH is a research-focused graduate program designed to develop advanced technical expertise, analytical ability, and independent research skills for careers in engineering practice, consulting, government, and academia. The program requires a minimum of 31 total credits, including at least 24 credits of regular coursework, 6 credits dedicated to the Master’s Thesis (CEE 899), and a one-credit graduate seminar course, ensuring a balance between structured learning, research development, and professional communication. Students admitted through the accelerated bachelor’s-to-master’s pathway may apply up to 8 credits of graduate coursework taken during their undergraduate studies toward the degree, subject to departmental and Graduate School approval. A defining component of the program is the thesis requirement, which involves conducting original research under faculty supervision, culminating in a formal written thesis and an oral defense before a faculty committee. This defense evaluates the student’s ability to apply engineering principles, analyze complex problems, and communicate findings effectively. In addition, students are required to participate in the Master’s Student Seminar (CEE 897) for at least one semester and deliver a presentation, which helps build professional communication and peer-learning skills. The program is structured to maintain high academic standards, requiring a minimum grade of B- in all courses and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for graduation. Students may also be eligible for teaching or research assistantships, providing valuable experience in instruction and academic research. Overall, the M.S. degree emphasizes deep technical training combined with independent research, preparing graduates to contribute to areas such as structural engineering, environmental systems, water resources, transportation infrastructure, and sustainable development, while also serving as a strong foundation for doctoral study or advanced professional practice.
