COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.S. in Biochemistry is a research-focused graduate program designed to provide advanced training in biochemical principles, laboratory techniques, and scientific inquiry, with a strong emphasis on original research culminating in a master’s thesis. To earn the degree, students must complete a minimum of 30 graduate credits, including 6–10 credits dedicated to the master’s thesis research project, which forms the central academic requirement of the program. Students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in biochemistry early in their studies, typically through coursework or an examination during the first year, ensuring they have the foundational knowledge needed for advanced study. Most students begin with core graduate-level courses such as Principles of Biochemistry I and II, unless prior preparation allows for an alternative academic pathway approved through diagnostic evaluation. A key feature of the program is the formation of a thesis committee during the first year, consisting of the faculty advisor and two additional members, who guide the student in selecting coursework, approving the research plan, and monitoring academic progress. The committee meets regularly, often each semester, to evaluate the student’s development and ensure alignment between coursework and research objectives. Students must complete all required and committee-approved courses with satisfactory grades and are expected to engage deeply with their research topic throughout the program. The culminating requirement is the preparation of a written master’s thesis based on original laboratory research, which must be submitted to the thesis committee for review at least two weeks before the final examination. The degree also requires a formal oral defense, which includes a public presentation of the research followed by a closed examination conducted by the committee. Final approval of the thesis is determined by a majority vote of the committee, and successful students must submit the final document to the Graduate School according to official procedures. Overall, the program is structured to develop highly skilled biochemists prepared for careers in research, biotechnology, healthcare, or further doctoral and professional study.
