COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Applied Mathematics is a 30-credit graduate program designed to develop advanced mathematical, analytical, and computational skills for solving complex problems in science, engineering, industry, and interdisciplinary research. The curriculum combines theoretical foundations with practical application, beginning with core required courses such as Mathematical Physics and Applied Functional Analysis, which build a strong understanding of the mathematical structures used to model physical and abstract systems. Students also complete a two-course sequence in applied mathematics, often including Numerical Analysis topics such as Numerical Linear Algebra and Numerical Partial Differential Equations, which provide essential tools for scientific computing and simulation. A central component of the program is the Master’s Project, which allows students to apply mathematical theory and computational methods to a focused research problem under faculty supervision, demonstrating both technical proficiency and independent problem-solving ability. In addition to core requirements, students select five elective courses in consultation with an advisor, offering significant flexibility to tailor the program to individual interests and career goals. These electives may be drawn from mathematics or related fields at the 800 level or higher, with at least one course required to be in statistics or another technical discipline outside mathematics, ensuring interdisciplinary breadth. This flexibility allows students to align their studies with applied areas such as data science, engineering, finance, or computational modeling. The program emphasizes early planning, requiring students to submit a formal program of study for approval by the applied mathematics faculty before the second semester. Unlike some graduate programs, there is no comprehensive examination, placing greater emphasis on coursework and the culminating project. Overall, the degree prepares students for careers that demand strong quantitative reasoning, advanced computation, and the ability to apply mathematical methods to real-world problems, as well as for further doctoral study in applied mathematics and related fields.
