COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Engineering in Ocean Engineering at University of New Hampshire requires students to complete at least 30 graduate credits focused on advanced ocean engineering concepts, interdisciplinary marine science, technical specialization, and applied research. The program combines engineering analysis, ocean science, and hands-on project experience to prepare graduates for professional careers in coastal engineering, marine technology, ocean mapping, renewable energy, underwater acoustics, and related ocean industries. Students begin with the required seminar sequence, OE 990 Ocean Seminars I and OE 991 Ocean Seminars II, which introduces current research topics, professional communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration within the ocean science and engineering community. To build foundational knowledge in ocean sciences, students select one course from areas such as biological oceanography, chemical oceanography, physical oceanography, or geological oceanography. The curriculum then requires four advanced technical courses chosen from specialized topics including Ocean Measurements Lab, Ocean Waves and Tides, Coastal Engineering and Processes, Design of Ocean Structures, Spectral Analysis of Geophysical Time Series Data, Underwater Acoustics, and Integrated Seabed Mapping Systems. These courses provide expertise in marine instrumentation, coastal dynamics, offshore structural design, acoustic systems, ocean mapping technologies, and data analysis techniques used in modern marine engineering applications. Students also complete three additional graduate-level CEPS courses at the 800–900 level, allowing customization of the degree according to research interests and career goals. The program concludes with OE 892 Master’s Project, an applied engineering project that enables students to integrate technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and professional skills while addressing a practical issue in ocean engineering or marine science. Depending on course selections, the degree typically requires between 30 and 37 credits. Through advanced coursework, laboratory experiences, interdisciplinary collaboration, and project-based learning, the UNH Master of Engineering in Ocean Engineering prepares graduates for leadership roles in government agencies, marine technology companies, environmental consulting firms, research institutions, and offshore engineering industries focused on sustainable ocean and coastal development.
