COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Mechanical Engineering requires a total of 32 credit hours and is designed to provide advanced technical education combined with practical engineering experience. The program includes 28 credit hours of approved graduate coursework along with a 4-credit Master’s Project (ME 992), which serves as the program’s major applied learning experience. Students are required to complete at least two 900-level graduate courses of three or more credits each in addition to the master’s project, ensuring exposure to advanced engineering concepts and specialized technical study. The curriculum is flexible and allows students to focus on areas related to their professional interests and career goals within mechanical engineering. For students who already possess substantial professional engineering experience comparable to the expectations of the master’s project, the department allows the possibility of substituting the project requirement with an additional 900-level graduate course, provided the student successfully petitions the department for approval. Academic standards in the program are rigorous, requiring students to maintain at least a “B” average, equivalent to a 3.00 GPA, with no course grade falling below a “B-.” The program also limits the number of previously completed graduate credits that may be transferred toward the degree, allowing a maximum of 12 credits from UNH graduate coursework completed before admission and up to 8 credits from non-UNH graduate courses. Students completing the project requirement must prepare a written report and deliver an oral presentation, with the report format determined by the faculty research adviser. In addition to coursework and project work, all full-time graduate students are expected to participate in the weekly Mechanical Engineering Graduate Seminar and give at least one presentation each year, helping them strengthen communication and professional presentation skills. While the program emphasizes advanced professional development and technical specialization, Master of Engineering students are generally not eligible for research or teaching assistantships, reflecting the professional and course-based focus of the degree rather than a research-intensive academic pathway.
