COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Civil Engineering is a professionally oriented graduate program designed to provide advanced technical training while preparing students for immediate impact in industry, infrastructure development, and engineering practice. The program requires a minimum of 30 total credit hours and is structured to strengthen core engineering knowledge while offering flexibility for students to tailor their coursework to specific civil engineering interests. Students admitted through the accelerated bachelor’s-to-master’s pathway may apply up to 8 credits of graduate-level coursework toward both degrees, subject to departmental and Graduate School approval, allowing for efficient completion of the program, often within five years in total. A key feature of the degree is the culminating experience, which is selected in consultation with the student’s master’s committee and may be completed through one of three options: a 3-credit Master’s Project (CEE 898), a comprehensive oral examination, or a written examination. The Master’s Project option requires students to develop a focused civil engineering topic and demonstrate applied problem-solving skills through a formal written report, while the oral and written exam options assess overall mastery of program content without additional credit requirements. Regardless of the pathway chosen, students must maintain strong academic performance, earning a grade of B- or higher in each course and maintaining a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 to graduate. The program is designed to emphasize practical engineering application rather than research-intensive thesis work, making it well-suited for students aiming to enter professional engineering roles quickly. M.Eng. students are not eligible for teaching or research assistantships, reinforcing the program’s professional, coursework-driven focus. Overall, the degree prepares graduates for careers in civil engineering fields such as structural design, transportation systems, water resources, geotechnical engineering, and environmental infrastructure, equipping them with advanced technical skills and applied knowledge needed to address real-world engineering challenges.
