COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Elementary Education at UNH requires a minimum of 32 graduate credits, although some students may complete more depending on prior coursework and licensure requirements. A key academic expectation is that all education-related courses required for teacher licensure must be completed with a grade of B- or higher, including equivalent courses taken in other departments. The program is structured around a core set of foundational courses that may be completed at either the undergraduate or graduate level, allowing some flexibility in entry pathways. These include EDUC 500 Exploring Teaching or EDUC 935A Seminar and Practicum in Teaching, EDUC 605 Educational Perspectives in Critical Times or EDUC 959 Issues in Education, and EDUC 801 Human Development & Learning: Cultural Perspectives, which together build a strong theoretical and reflective foundation for teaching practice.Students also complete a series of subject-specific pedagogy courses designed to prepare them for teaching across elementary school disciplines. These include EDUC 803F Teaching Elementary School Science, EDUC 803M Teaching Elementary Social Studies, EDUC 806 Teaching & Learning Literacy in the Elementary Classroom, MATH 801 or MATH 601 Exploring Mathematics for Teachers I, MATH 703 Teaching of Mathematics in Grades K–6, and EDUC 851A Inclusive Elementary Education: Literacies and Learning for Diverse Learners. A major component of the program is the year-long internship experience, which is completed through EDUC 900A and EDUC 808 in the fall semester and EDUC 901A and EDUC 809 in the spring semester, totaling 16 credits. During this internship year, students work full-time in elementary classrooms while simultaneously engaging in seminar-based reflection and professional development.To ensure readiness for this intensive internship, students must complete at least 12 graduate-level credits beforehand. Any exceptions require advisor consultation and approval from the Director of Educator Preparation. Overall, the program is carefully designed to integrate theory, methods, and immersive classroom practice, preparing candidates for licensure and professional teaching careers.
