COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Secondary Education requires a minimum of 32 graduate-level credits, with the exact number determined by a student’s academic background, competencies, and career goals in consultation with an adviser. To qualify for licensure, all education courses and approved equivalents from other departments must be completed with a grade of B- or higher. The program is structured around core education requirements, subject-specific methods courses, and a full teaching internship with a required Master’s Inquiry Project completed during the internship year. Core coursework includes foundational studies in teaching and learning such as Exploring Teaching or Seminar and Practicum in Teaching, Educational Perspectives in Critical Times or Issues in Education, Human Development and Learning from Cultural Perspectives, Teaching Reading through Content Areas (required for certain subject licenses), and Methods of Inclusive Secondary Education focusing on literacy, learning, and student transitions. Students must also complete a supervised teaching internship across two semesters (Fall and Spring), which typically accounts for 6–12 credits total depending on the plan of study. In addition, students are required to complete 9–12 credits in their subject-area concentration to deepen disciplinary expertise, while remaining credits may be completed in education or related fields. Before beginning the internship, students must complete at least 12 graduate-level credits to ensure readiness for full-time teaching responsibilities. The program also includes specialized methods courses aligned with certification areas such as English, mathematics, biology, art, music, health education, physical education, social studies, theater, and English as a Second Language, each focusing on instructional strategies and curriculum design for that discipline. Overall, the M.A.T. combines subject specialization, educational theory, and extensive classroom practice to prepare future teachers for licensure and effective teaching in diverse secondary school environments.
