COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Music with a concentration in musicology requires the completion of 30 credit hours along with a substantial final project that demonstrates advanced research, analytical thinking, and scholarly understanding of music. The program is designed for students interested in music history, music literature, performance practices, and critical musical research while also encouraging broader artistic and academic development. The concentration component includes MUSI 869 Musicology Seminar, which students complete three times, usually with different instructors, allowing them to explore a variety of historical periods, musical topics, and research approaches. Students also complete MUSI 891 Research Seminar, which strengthens research methods, scholarly writing, and critical analysis skills necessary for advanced academic work. Supportive coursework includes MUSI 865 Introduction to Bibliography and MUSI 894 Theory Seminar, providing students with essential training in music research resources, theoretical analysis, and scholarly methodology. In addition, students select three credits from courses such as MUSI 801 Topics in Music History, which may be repeated for credit when taught with different themes or instructors, giving students exposure to diverse musicological subjects and perspectives. The program also includes nine elective credits that allow students to personalize their studies according to individual interests and professional goals. Elective options include counterpoint, advanced music history, graduate applied lessons such as voice, cello, or bassoon, advanced conducting, and special studies courses that may involve participation in large or studio ensembles for up to six credits. While electives are usually chosen from within the Department of Music, students may also select approved courses outside the department in consultation with the Graduate Coordinator. The culminating requirement is a substantial written research project focused on a topic of the student’s special interest. Some students may instead complete a lecture-recital accompanied by a written essay. Students with a performance emphasis are encouraged to present public recitals in addition to these requirements. The degree concludes with a final oral examination that evaluates the student’s ability to apply critical thinking to music literature and discuss advanced independent scholarly or artistic work. Overall, the program combines rigorous academic study, research training, musical analysis, and performance opportunities to prepare students for careers in education, research, performance, or doctoral study in musicology and related fields.
