COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Arts in Music with a concentration in composition requires the completion of 30 credit hours along with a final project that serves as the culminating experience of the degree. The program is designed to provide advanced training in music composition, theory, musicology, and related musical studies while encouraging independent creative and scholarly development. Students complete a structured concentration in composition that includes MUSI 875 and MUSI 876 Composition, MUSI 877 Advanced Composition, and MUSI 891 Research Seminar, which together help students strengthen compositional techniques, creative expression, and research skills. In addition to the concentration courses, students are required to complete supportive music courses such as MUSI 865 Introduction to Bibliography, MUSI 894 Theory Seminar, and MUSI 869 Musicology Seminar, providing a strong academic foundation in music scholarship, theory, and historical study. The program also includes elective coursework, allowing students to personalize their studies according to their interests and career goals. Electives may include topics in music history, advanced instrumental conducting, graduate-level applied lessons such as voice, cello, or bassoon, and special studies courses that can include participation in large ensembles or studio ensembles for up to six credits. Some courses, including Musicology Seminar and Topics in Music History, may be repeated for credit, offering additional flexibility and depth of study. While most electives are typically selected from within the Department of Music, students may also choose approved courses outside the department in consultation with the Graduate Coordinator. A major feature of the program is the final project, which is developed collaboratively with a faculty adviser and the graduate studies coordinator. This project may take different forms depending on the student’s interests, including an original composition, composition recital, lecture recital, or research paper. The degree concludes with a final oral examination that evaluates the student’s ability to demonstrate advanced compositional skills, creative achievement, and independent scholarly or artistic work. Overall, the program combines rigorous academic study, artistic creativity, research, and performance opportunities to prepare students for professional careers or further graduate study in music composition and related fields.
