COURSE CURRICULUM

The Wildlife and Conservation Biology major at the University of New Hampshire is a science-based program designed to prepare students to understand, manage, and conserve wildlife populations and their habitats in the face of environmental challenges such as climate change, habitat loss, and human population growth. The curriculum builds a strong interdisciplinary foundation by combining biology, ecology, chemistry, mathematics, environmental science, and policy, ensuring students understand both the scientific and societal dimensions of conservation work. Students begin with core science courses such as Introductory Biology (covering molecular biology, biodiversity, and ecology), chemistry for life sciences, calculus or quantitative reasoning, and wildlife ecology. They also complete field-oriented courses like Field Dendrology, Natural Resources Field Methods, and a sophomore seminar that introduces them to wildlife and conservation biology concepts early in the program. As the degree progresses, students take applied ecology and data-focused courses such as biostatistics, wildlife population ecology, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), and conservation genetics, which help them develop strong analytical and research skills for studying ecosystems and species populations. A major component of the program involves selecting specialized courses in animal morphology, evolution, and ecology, where students may study mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, or marine life depending on their interests. Communication training is also included, ensuring students can effectively present scientific information through writing or public speaking. Policy and management courses introduce students to environmental law, natural resource policy, and wildlife habitat management, connecting science with real-world conservation decision-making. Advanced ecology electives allow deeper study in areas such as disease ecology, biogeography, silviculture, aquatic ecosystems, and community ecology. Hands-on fieldwork is emphasized throughout the program, giving students experience in wildlife monitoring, habitat assessment, and ecological research methods. The degree concludes with a capstone course focused on conservation biology or forest management, where students integrate their knowledge to solve complex environmental problems. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in wildlife biology, conservation science, environmental consulting, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and graduate study in ecology or environmental sciences.
