COURSE CURRICULUM
The statistics major at University of New Hampshire provides students with a strong foundation in mathematics, probability, statistical modeling and data analysis while also developing practical computing and research skills. Students in the program must maintain a minimum grade of C- in all required courses and an overall GPA of at least 2.0 within the major. The curriculum begins with essential mathematics courses such as Calculus I and II, Differential Equations, Multidimensional Calculus and Linear Algebra, which build the mathematical background necessary for advanced statistical work. Students also complete programming or computational courses using MATLAB, Python or C, allowing them to gain experience with data analysis and scientific computing. Core statistics courses include Introduction to Statistical Analysis, Applied Regression Analysis, Probability with Applications and Principles of Statistical Inference, which teach students how to analyze data, build predictive models and interpret uncertainty in real-world situations. The program also offers advanced statistical electives in areas such as statistical computing, advanced modeling, quality improvement, survival analysis, experimental design and time series analysis. These courses prepare students for careers in data science, actuarial science, finance, healthcare analytics, research, artificial intelligence and government statistics. Students complete a capstone experience through a seminar, project or senior thesis, where they apply statistical methods to practical or research-based problems. The degree emphasizes both theory and application, helping students become skilled in statistical reasoning, problem solving and professional software use. Because statistics is increasingly important in technology, business and scientific research, graduates are prepared for strong employment opportunities or further graduate study in statistics, mathematics, data analytics or related quantitative fields. The program is especially suitable for students who enjoy mathematics, logical thinking, computing and working with real-world data to solve complex problems.
