COURSE CURRICULUM

The sport management and leadership program at University of New Hampshire prepares students for careers in the rapidly growing sports industry through a combination of academic study, leadership training and practical experience. Students explore the business, cultural and social aspects of sports while developing skills in management, marketing, communication, coaching and event planning. The program requires students to complete core courses such as SML 580 Sport Industry, SML 645 Leadership in Sport, SML 741W Social Issues in Contemporary Sports and SML 761 Career Development in Sport Management and Leadership. Students must also complete a statistics course and gain professional experience through internships in sport organizations. The curriculum allows students to specialize in one of three focus areas: Sport Marketing and Event Management, Coaching and Athletic Administration, or Sport Media and Communication. Courses include topics such as sport sponsorship and sales, sport finance, social media marketing, sport facility management, sport psychology, media production and athletic administration. Students interested in coaching can study basketball, soccer, football, hockey or track and field coaching theory. The program also offers electives that help students build expertise in global sport, advanced marketing, coaching psychology and sports history. Practical learning is a major part of the degree, giving students opportunities to work with schools, colleges, athletic organizations and professional teams. Graduates are prepared for careers in sport marketing, event operations, athletic administration, media relations, coaching and sport communications. The degree also provides strong preparation for graduate study in sport business, sports law, leadership and sport psychology. Students are expected to maintain strong academic performance, including earning at least a B- in Sport Industry and a C or higher in all required courses.
