COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Physics at the University of New Hampshire Physics Program is an intensive and mathematically rigorous program designed for students who want deep scientific training in theoretical, computational, and experimental physics. The curriculum requires between 90 and 96 credits and provides advanced study in mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, statistical physics, scientific computing, and experimental laboratory methods. Students begin with foundational courses in general physics, calculus, chemistry, and scientific programming using Python before progressing to higher-level studies in classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and quantum mechanics, including modern topics such as quantum information and quantum computing. The program strongly emphasizes mathematics, requiring coursework in calculus, linear algebra, multidimensional calculus, and differential equations, which provide the analytical tools necessary for understanding advanced physical systems. Laboratory and computational experiences are central parts of the curriculum, with students completing experimental physics courses and computational physics recitations that develop research, electronics, instrumentation, modeling, and data-analysis skills. Students also select advanced electives in specialized fields such as optics, astrophysics, space plasma physics, nuclear physics, quantum materials, chaos theory, or general relativity and cosmology, allowing them to tailor the degree toward personal scientific interests or career goals. During the senior year, every student completes a capstone experience through independent research, a senior thesis, or a major scientific project approved by the department, helping students gain practical research experience and advanced problem-solving abilities. The program maintains high academic standards, requiring students by the end of sophomore year to achieve at least a C grade in required lower-level physics courses and an overall GPA of 2.33 in these subjects to continue in the B.S. track. Graduates are well prepared for careers or graduate study in physics, engineering, medical physics, quantum technology, aerospace, computing, scientific research, data science, and other advanced technical industries where strong analytical, computational, and scientific skills are essential.
