COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Microbiology at the University of New Hampshire is a rigorous life-science degree designed to provide students with a deep understanding of microorganisms and their roles in health, disease, and the environment. The program is built on a strong foundation of foundational sciences, including General Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry with laboratory work, Calculus for Life Sciences, and introductory courses in Physics I and II. These courses establish the quantitative and chemical background necessary for advanced biological study. Students then progress into core bioscience courses such as molecular and cellular biology, evolution and biodiversity, cell biology, genetics, biostatistics, and biochemistry with laboratory training, ensuring a strong grasp of modern biological principles and experimental techniques. The microbiology core further develops specialized expertise through courses in professional scientific perspectives, general and pathogenic microbiology with lab components, and microbial ecology, preparing students to understand microorganisms at molecular, clinical, and environmental levels. A key feature of the program is its emphasis on laboratory-based learning, where students gain hands-on experience in microbial techniques, diagnostics, and research methodologies. In the upper level of the program, students complete six major electives, including required laboratory and advanced 700-level coursework, allowing them to specialize in areas such as immunology, virology, molecular diagnostics, microbial genetics, infectious disease, human microbiome studies, bioinformatics, and microbial ecology. These electives also allow interdisciplinary exploration in fields such as epidemiology, environmental microbiology, marine biology, wildlife disease, and medical sociology.
