COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (B.S.M.E.) at the University of New Hampshire is a highly structured and rigorous professional engineering program designed to prepare students for careers in engineering practice as well as advanced graduate study. The program requires students to maintain strong academic performance throughout their studies, including a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all engineering and science coursework, particularly in upper-level technical courses taken after the junior year. Progression through the program is carefully monitored through “predictor courses,” where students must demonstrate competency in foundational subjects such as Physics, Calculus, Statics, Mechanics of Materials, and Thermodynamics before advancing to higher levels; failure to meet these benchmarks can result in program restrictions or removal after multiple unsuccessful attempts. The curriculum begins with essential coursework in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering computing, and introductory engineering design, followed by a structured sequence of core mechanical engineering subjects including thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, dynamics, materials science, machine design, systems modeling, and experimental measurement and data analysis. These courses build a strong foundation in both theoretical analysis and practical engineering problem-solving. A key feature of the program is the two-semester senior design project, where students work in teams to apply engineering principles to real-world challenges, developing technical, communication, and project management skills. In addition, students complete five technical elective courses that allow for specialization in areas such as analytical mechanics, computational methods, control systems, finite element analysis, or experimental fluid dynamics, along with select interdisciplinary options from engineering, computing, and applied sciences. The program also integrates supporting coursework in areas such as economics, writing, and electrical engineering to ensure well-rounded professional development. Overall, the B.S.M.E. curriculum provides a comprehensive blend of theory, laboratory experience, design work, and specialization opportunities, preparing graduates for diverse roles in mechanical engineering industries such as energy systems, robotics, manufacturing, aerospace, and research and development, as well as for continued study in graduate engineering programs.
