COURSE CURRICULUM

The Homeland Security major at UNH is a structured, applied program designed to prepare students for professional and leadership roles in security, emergency management, intelligence, cybersecurity, and related fields. All major courses must be completed with a grade of C- or higher, and students must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA within the major. The curriculum consists of 56 credits of core coursework that builds a strong foundation in both theory and applied practice. Students begin with introductory and skill-based courses such as Introduction to Homeland Security, Professional Skills in Homeland Security, and Introduction to Cybersecurity, which develop essential analytical and technical competencies. As they progress, they study specialized areas including Political Violence and Terrorism, Emergency Management, Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience, Homeland Security Law and Policy, Environmental and Human Security, and National Security Intelligence. Methodological training is provided through courses such as Disaster Research Methods or approved alternatives in research design, ensuring students can critically evaluate data and policy decisions. Advanced learning is reinforced through Strategic Planning and Decision Making, along with a required Internship or Senior Thesis and a final Capstone course that integrates knowledge across the discipline. In addition to the core 56 credits, students must complete a 40-credit breadth requirement, which can be fulfilled through options such as two minors, a minor plus a self-designed concentration, a second major, a transferred associate degree, or another approved combination of coursework. This flexible structure allows students to tailor their academic experience while ensuring interdisciplinary depth. Overall, the program emphasizes practical skills, analytical thinking, and applied problem-solving, preparing graduates for careers in government agencies, law enforcement, cybersecurity, emergency management, corporate security, and national security organizations, as well as for continued graduate study in related fields.
